5 Mistakes to Avoid When Moving House in Cambridge
Moving house is a mission at the best of times. Even in a lovely spot like Cambridge, with its big old trees, the cafes and the quick run up the expressway to Hamilton, it can all go pear-shaped if you wing it.
After years of watching people stress about their moves, we reckon the same five mistakes crop up again and again. Dodge these and your house removals in Cambridge should go a whole lot smoother.
1. Leaving the Booking Till the Last Minute
Ringing around the week before and expecting a truck to be free? Yeah, nah. End of the month, Fridays, weekends and school holidays fill up fast, and then you’re stuck with whatever’s left, usually at a worse time and a higher price.
Book your moving company in Cambridge as soon as your date’s locked in. Three or four weeks out is sweet. If your dates have a bit of wiggle room, aim for a Tuesday or Wednesday. Trucks are easier to get, and you’re not battling weekend traffic either.
2. Hiring the Wrong Size Job
Some folks book a massive truck for a one-bedroom flat. Others try to cram a three-bedroom house into the back of a ute and end up doing six trips, swearing the whole way.
If you’ve got a small place, a few big bits of furniture or just a couch and a bed, a man with a van in Cambridge is often all you need, and it’s easy on the wallet. But if you’re shifting a whole family home with the fridge, the washing machine, the trampoline and forty boxes of “stuff we might need”, get the proper truck and a full crew.
Do a quick walk through the house before you ask for a quote. Jot down the big items and roughly how many boxes you’ve got. The better the info, the more accurate the quote, and the fewer surprises on the day.
3. Packing Too Late (and Too Randomly)
Everyone thinks packing will take an afternoon. It never does. Then it’s 11pm the night before, you’re chucking random things into boxes, and the kettle’s buried somewhere under a pile of towels.
Here’s what actually helps:
Start about two weeks out, with the stuff you hardly ever use, like the spare room, the garage and that cupboard of mystery cables.
Heavy things go in small boxes. Light things go in big ones. Your back will thank you.
Label every box with the room it’s going to. “Kitchen” beats “misc” every time.
Pack an essentials box with phone chargers, toilet paper, snacks, meds, a couple of mugs and some bedding. You’ll be stoked if you did it when you’re knackered on night one.
Wrap your glasses and ornaments properly too. Nobody wants to unpack nan’s teapot in pieces.
4. Forgetting About Access and Parking
Cambridge has a bit of everything: old character homes, new subdivisions, lifestyle blocks and the odd driveway that’s basically a goat track. If the truck can’t park close to your door, the crew is lugging gear a long way, and that eats time (and your money).
Have a look at both places before moving day and check for:
Somewhere decent to park the truck
Steep driveways, gravel or tight turning spots
Narrow stairs, skinny doorways or awkward corners
Any street parking rules
If something’s tricky, just say so when you book. We’d much rather know upfront than rock up and find a wee surprise. Shifting down from Auckland? Let us know both addresses so we can plan the run properly.
5. Not Getting the House Ready
Even the keenest crew will slow down if the place isn’t ready. Full drawers, a fridge that’s still running, a washing machine still plumbed in and bits and bobs on every surface all add up.
Before the big day:
Empty out the drawers and cupboards that don’t need to travel with the furniture.
Defrost and dry the fridge and freezer at least a day ahead. Nobody likes a soggy truck.
Unplug the washing machine and disconnect the hoses before the crew turns up, along with anything else that’s hooked in.
Clear the hallways so the crew can get that couch through without a wrestling match.
Keep your valuables, passports and important papers separate and take them in your own car. Don’t let them near the truck.
And sort your power, internet and mail redirection early. Moving into a new place with no wifi is a special kind of grim.
Make It Easy on Yourself
Moving’s never going to be the highlight of your year, but it doesn’t have to be a nightmare. Book early, pick the right service, pack smart, check your access and get the house ready. Do that and you’re most of the way there.
